Communication, one of the first things thrown upon us as individuals, where milestones are marked by a first word being spoken or a name being written perfectly.
As time continues on and age is no longer the main factor in marking these milestones, the success of this learning process is still not apparent to many around me. If communication fails we reconnect it. But after how many attempts does one reluctantly turn a blind eye to these failed connections?
It has often been said that technology has put a dampener on communications. No longer is time spent on the formation of letters gracefully on a page rather an abbreviated sms, facebook post or tweet are deemed equivalent. And yet we continue to embrace; no, let me correct that rely upon technology itself as life itself.
If we are unhappy we channel our energy to fix that thing we deem missing from our lives. Yet we never look around at the things that are really absent. Communication is necessary– like air in the lungs and blood in the veins and yet we continue to search for something better-something physical.
Communication is physical, it is the friend sitting beside you as you weep, it is the lover expressing their love, it is the nervousness felt deep down inside when the news headlines before you challenge everything that you believe in. Without the phone call from the friend, the Christmas card posted in September from overseas, without the hugs, without the truth being said absence is brought to relationships-Without communication living is replaced with life. Indeed we live in a society so misconstrued in living life in madness that communicating to our own souls is something rarely achieved. Just open your eyes and see the emptiness in others-the colleague unhappy in their job, the friend absent from a gathering, an unhappy relationship, unresolved relationships and relationships that simply do not exist.
Do we as humanity choose to continually keep ourselves, our thoughts, our truth hidden in the hope that life will be replaced with living? Hear my truth. We have to move forward, we must stare fate in the face and risk embarrassment, risk being hurt, risk the rejection and the humiliation of telling someone we truly care about our truth. Communication may appear to be the devil of our lives today but the real pain will be the regret of not communicating in the yesterday. Live. Breathe. Be true to yourself. Give your all. Truth. Believe. Dare. COMMUNICATE.
