Prague: Trdelnik

When travelling through Europe on a budget I needed to make a few sacrifices. In doing so, I opted out of a three course lunch cruise and decided to explore Prague's city centre with my Canadian roommate. It was like stepping back in time to the medieval ages where the castles replicated Disney land and men were dressed in those weird clown pants. Anyway - as we wandered around the city centre we came across this fabulous food market.

My roommate opted for the more substantial lunch, a delicious chicken kebab with vegetables on a skewer. The chicken, veges and even the wooden skewer were then placed in a hot dog bun. She thoroughly enjoyed it...me on the other hand - well this blog isnt called emazingly sweet for nothing.  This is what I found:

Now according to good old Wikipedia Tredelnik is "a traditional cake and sweet pastry, made from rolled dough, wrapped around a stick then grilled and topped with sugar and walnut mix”. My description, for those who may never get a chance to try one of these it is like a freshly made donut but a million times better.  The reason why, has to lay in the method in which they were cooked.  As you can see from my pictures they are cooked on a big wooden pole over an open fire and the flavour from the smoke was really evident in the dough. You could choose heaps of different flavours though given my lack of knowledge of the Czech language I just pointed to one that looked like Vanilla. They are given to you straight off the fire they were warm and melt in your mouth.

Even if I never get an opportunity to travel back to the Czech Republic I would recommend those that enjoy BBQ'ing and camping to have a go at making them.  Here is the recipeSo as my Canadian roommate looked on as I devoured my emazingly sweet version of lunch for less than $2 Australian dollars all I could do was smile :)
Definitely give it a go as a fun interactive dessert idea over the barbie or fire pit.
