Tinkerbell Cake

My wonderful partner offered recently to make his God daughter her 4th birthday cake. And by him – he meant me. The brief was limited – Tinkerbell & Pink (as my partner reassured me that anything would be fine).
So I set out researching Tinkerbell designs, asking friends if they had figurines I could borrow, and designing my own Tinkerbell cake.

Of course I couldn't find any figurines and my design changed many times.  In my last ditch effort to the shops to try and find some sort of figurine I found a doll in the local $2 store and also Tinkerbell cup cake tins.  In the end i decided to go with a big cake as the centre piece and little cup cakes for the little kids.  I used a vanilla cake batter and made two small round cakes (20 inch).   Once cooked and cooled I filled the middle with dark chocolate ganache and then covered it with more dark chocolate ganache-just in case there wasn't enough chocolate :)

I covered the cake with pink fondant (see rolling fondant). To make the flowers I tinted the fondant various shades of pink and used a biscuit cutter. I ended up finding a doll - not a Tinkerbell doll but it was the best (and only) thing I could find and placed the doll in the cake. In hindsight I would cut the holes for doll first before putting the fondant on the cake. I tried to hide the damage caused by the heat and the hour and a half car trip (in 30 degree heat) by putting flowers and love hearts over the damaged fondant. I was still not satisfied with the final product but I don't think the birthday girl minded as she quickly ripped the doll out of the cake and licked the ganache, fondant and cake off the doll.
This is what I came up with:
